Im getting into the habit of taking pictures of things and curiosities that call for my attention, now even more than ever. So any hints on what program I should use?

Use Photoshop Elements. Easy and universal to use. Fairly cheap. You can get an earlier version on EBay. You can even find an earlier full version of Photoshop on Ebay

GiMP is free and EXCELLENT.
