This is what I have to say about tattoos. Honey, you can get Hepatitis C from it. It is the most rampant cause of cirrhosis of the liver. There is a treatment for Hepatitis C, but only 50% of those infected will respond to given treatment; the rest get liver disease and die. I also just got my blood drawn yesterday to see if I have Hepatitis C. You see we just found out 4 days ago that my husband has it and that I could also have it because I have slept with him. It's no small matter. I'm sitting here scared wondering what the results will be. I hope my test results come back negative. Please pray for me. I also hope for your friend's sake that she chooses not to get the tattoo; it's just not worth it. :(

Additional Note: A lot of people say it's fine if you get it done at a sanitary professional place. What they don't tell you is it doesn't matter how sanitary it is because part of the ink that is used goes back into the ink vials. To show you what I mean...imagine drinking out of a straw. Part of the liquid in the straw goes back into the glass when you are finished. It may be a very small amount; however, it is the same concept with the clean needles and ink vials when people get tattoos. Once you get Hepatitis C you have to get interferon shots 3 times a week for 6-18 months and there is no guarantee that it will work or that you won't relapse. I sure hope my test comes back negative. I will just hate it if it doesn't, and it's so sad that my husband has this. We have an appointment set up with his doctor in a couple weeks to go over his treatment plan. I think people that get tattoos are crazy!!!!

Usually I would say no to tattoos at age 18, because most teens get a tattoo at that age only because they CAN, not because they really want the tattoo they are getting. However, I believe this is an exception, since you are getting it in the memory of your father. As long as you communicate this to your mother I'm sure she will understand. If she still has issues with it you can turn it into a family activity- you both can pick out the tattoo parlor (make sure to pick a sanitary, non-shady one) and she can come when you get it done. Bonding always wins mother's hearts!

If her reason for a tattoo is to look cool, show her an old woman who has one. Remind her that a tattoo is permanent and that her body will start sagging when she's older.

If she likes the body art there's nothing you can really do to stop her. Some people find the artwork fascinating, but again remind her... its permanent, even though people have taken it off with laser.

Plus its painful, and if done incorrectly can cause infection.

What reason is she getting a tattoo??

Really there's no way you can get someone to not get a tattoo. If their mind is made up then they're going to do what they want to do. It's their body, if they're going to be stupid enough to ruin it for a stupid reason then that's their own fault and they can always save up and get it removed.

I have a aunt that has a tatto and she got it when she was about 18 and she really regrets it because she doesn't like it and it also costs a lot of money to get rid of and a lot of pain. Just don't do it!

It is her own choice to make. However, if you want to be a busybody, you can subtly associate unflattering things with it. Then when she thinks of a tattoo, she will have negative deterring images in her head; consider that now she wants a tattoo because she has positive images associated with it.

You probably can't...it's like trying to convince someone who doesn't want one to get one anyways

tell them to think about when they're an old grandma or grandpa! ask them if they really want to be old and wrinkly with a tatoo! remind them the the surgery that removes tatoos is VERY EXPENSIVE and very painful!

You can present a well-worded, cogent argument ... but, in the end, freedom of choice will win out.
For her sake, I hope she doesn't do it.
