Cary Grant - was born on January 18th, 1904, at 15 Hughenden Road, Horfield, Bristol. He was the son of Elias Leach and his wife Elsie. He was baptised as Archibald Alec Leach on February 9th, but his birth was not registered until 29th February - on his birth certificate his middle name is Alexander. The couple had baby Archie circumcised. This was not (and still is not) a common operation in Britain except on the grounds of religion, and has led some researchers to believe that Elsie was not his biological mother but rather a woman of Jewish parentage, Lillian. There is little evidence for this.

Cary Grant told some people he was Jewish and others that he wasn't. There is no evidence to support either claim, but Cary Grant was known to donate money to Jewish causes.

He always wore a gold chain around his neck with three charms attached. The three charms represented the religions of each of his former wives:
A St Christopher for Virginia Cherrill (Roman Catholic)
A small cross for Barbara Hutton and Betsy Drake (Protestants)
A Star of David for Dyan Cannon (Jewish)

Archibald Alexander Leach (January 18, 1904 – November 29, 1986), better known by his screen name, Cary Grant, was a British-born American film actor. He was perhaps the foremost exemplar of the debonair leading man, not only handsome, but also witty and charming.

His early years in Bristol, England, would have been an ordinary lower-middle-class childhood except for one extraordinary event. At age nine he came home from school one day and was told his mother had gone off to a seaside resort. The real truth, however, was that she had been placed in a mental institution, where she would remain for years, and he was never told about it (he never saw his mother again until he was in his late 20s).

I don't believe he was Jewish.

It mattered to him---there is far more evidence that he was Jewish than anything else. His life was circumscribed by more than just giving to Jewish causes--and he was obsessive about that. His deep sympathies for Judaism were always transparent. As to why this mattered so much, this is not clear. Being Jewish may be all that was necessary to know, though I suspect there was more to it.

Judaism is, without a doubt, the most fascinating, and deeply just, religions on the planet. It makes sense to me that CG would have deep feelings about it,

No he wasn't. I knew him from his days as a director of L'Oreal and riding up in the elevator with him in the Burlington Building on 6th Ave. in NYC. He was of a Christian denomination evidently by the cruciform necklace he wore.
