When I grew up I heard that word a lot. What does "poser" mean to you, as in "he's such a poser"? Does it vary with genre (nu-metal, pop, rock, goth, hip-hop, indie, whatever) or do all posers have the same hallmarks of poser-ness? (And please, no answers like 'a poser pretends to be something they're not'. I know that much.)

It's like some people are really dedicated to mastering a musical instrument. They spend all their time practicing and all their money goes for guitar strings and sheet music and music lessons. And other people buy an instrument, and tell everyone "I'm a guitar player" and they spend their money on "guitar player" clothes and stuff, but they never bother to learn to play guitar very well.

The one totally is into playing guitar while the other is merely interested having others think of him (or her) as a guitar player.

It's not so much trying to be something they're not, but really thinking that they do it better. They know it is not where they belong, but are afraid to admit it. So, they go all out and dress in the fashions and listen to the music and such. In time, they virtually get it and are soon no longer posers. Weird, huh? It's like after a while they're not even posing...

A person who tries to portray someone they are not for one reason or another. The main reason is to fit in with a group or cliche.
