Been wondering the same thing ... sounds fishy to me.

Its all about refining the oil thats the problem
There hasnt been a new refinery built in this country in about 35 years.
Or so the thieving oil companies say.
Of course theyre all full of crap.
Manufactred shortages cause prices to sky rocket.

You're paying for the price to make gas from the oil...if the supply is low, it's harder to make at a higher rate, therefore a price increase.

Because gas goes through more of a refining process than the oil you put in your engine.

If you changed your oil every time you got gas it would go up.

Prices are based more on willingness to pay than they are on wholesale prices. Basically gas is high priced because you are willing to pay those prices, but oil is not because you would not be willing to pay that price.

also you are only buying a little bit of oil vs. a lot of gas

It's not as noticeable in the politics of it all. Also, I think the real hitch in the gasoline end of it is the refining and I don't think motor oil is as complicated to refine as gasoline.

it does...just not to the same degree and becuase one buys motor oil far less often than gas, one doesn't notice the differences as much.

because the owners of the gas stations can increase/decrease the gas for anticipated increases or decreases of the price they pay and supply and demand.
