The distance is just around 970 miles, about 15-16 hours driving time.
Take I-30 to Little Rock, I-40 to Memphis, I-55 north to Sikeston, then I-57 all the way thru Illinois to Chicago.
You can drive Memphis to Chicago in one day; I've done it.
Dallas to Memphis/Memphis to Chicago is a long, but doable two day trip.
Don't take I-35. It's 100 miles longer trip.

It'll take you about 17 hours if the traffic is nice and you don't stop for more than a few minutes at a time. Not sure about the shortest way but Yahoo can tell ya.

Approx. 2-3 days with stops to rest, lots shorter if you don't stop may be a day or day & a half. You want to take the same route that big trucks take, 'cause they use the easiest to travel, unless you want to go through all the weird places and the mountains. So if you know a truck driver that travels out of state, your best answer would come from them.
Another option would be to use some info from AAA.
