It was just a figure of expression.

Apple Computer calls their electronic pen input software "Ink" and the software company bought by the Washington Post ages ago to create their dynamic news pages was called "Digital Ink".

It is just a euphamism for an age gone by when everthing used to be written in ink. Now we use not just pens, but also pencils, computers, and so forth. Laser printers do not use ink - they use toner powder which is melted onto the page where the paper is heated with a laser. However, we still often say in the office, "hey, the printer is out of ink!"

In this case, the Yahoo team meant they were running out of disk space. They also wanted to apply some enhancements they had made to the software. So they took care of everything at once, to avert a crisis.

Also, since you could still read the site, just not change it - that is akin to "running out of ink".

They didn't run out ink. They were switching systems to a new site and improving the memory capacity. There are a lot of questions and answers in here.

Their ink "suppositories" run low. Sometimes we write so much that they have to go buy a new pen.

Thanks to whoever was talking about Yahoo's suppositories the other day. Sorry I can't find the question now, or I'd link to it.

It was a joke.

You see, Yahoo ran out of space on one computer server, so they had to transfer to another.

"Scribe is out", "out of ink", they were jokes. They meant that it was temporarily down while they made the switch.

I have a theory that they re-designed a few things and that they are using the ink thing to keep us at bay.
