Ok, here's the story. There's a guy I know from school, who I never talked to until four months ago on the internet. Eventually, we came to be friends, then good friends, and now we like each other. The problem--he's Mexican, I'm Caucasian. Neither he nor I care at all about this. My friends don't really care too much either, (or so they say). Therefore, I wasn't worrying at all about the ethnicity issue until last Saturday I showed someone a picture of him, after I had been talking up a storm about him. Their first reaction--"He's Mexican!"

This caused me to think. Does society find our more-than-friends relationship acceptable? Will we be the most talked-down set of people in town? You are society; you tell me.

Race should not be an issue. If someone wants to look down upon this, they are the insecure and wrong ones, not you. Be proud that you aren't letting society choose your life.

It probably depends on your community - in a big urban setting, I sincerely doubt that anyone would think twice or care at all. In a smaller town, especially one which is not very diverse, you might get more "resistance" to the idea.

It's important to remember that your relationship is just that - you shouldn't need anyone else's approval. If you like the guy and are happy with how he treats you, let disapproving society go hang!

It isn't important what others think about you as long as the two of you like each other and feel good about it. And if people talk just ignore them. This is your life, not theirs, if you're happy with this guy you shouldn't care about the rest. And anyway, everyone who has a problem with your relationship because of matters of ethnicity is very, very narrow-minded and you'd better not listen to their advice.

Who gives damn?! OK, anyone who gets their panties in a twist just because of your race and his can just like.. die!!! That is racist! I am white and I don't think there is anything wrong with someone being in a relationship with someone who just happens to be not your race. Do you really care for this guy? If you do, you shouldn't care about what other people think of your relationship. If you're that worried about being the talk of your town, don't even go out with the guy. Personally, I think you're an idiot for even asking us this question. If you love him, you shouldn't give a damn what other people think of your relationship with him.

Society is going to talk about interracial relationships no matter what. I think to have a interracial relationship you have to have tough skin. People are going to look and even say things, but to hell with them. If that person makes you happy, then OH WELL! You have to just be prepared for the looks and nasty words, but as long as you two and handle that I say go for it. Wish you the best of luck!

There's not really a societal problem. Your friend probably built a picture of this person you were talking about and just assumed he was Caucasian. It's a surprise to anyone to have their assumptions, even minor ones, jolted, that's all.

I think it's a bit sad that you feel you need to worry about it.
It doesn't matter what his race is and why would your friends have a problem with it? I thought from the question line that you must be dating a zebra or something!

yah these days it's really an individual issue. sometimes cultural. some families are really racist, some don't care. i live in liberal california where 70% of my school was pro-Gore in the Gore-Bush election. other areas might be more conservative. other areas might even be more liberal. sometimes people say stuff like "he's mexican!" even tho they don't really care sometimes they're just like saying cuz it stands out to them, like they thought he would be white and they're just surprised. i think it's fine. i think love knows no boundaries, and if u like him it shouldn't matter what he look like, as long as u like how he looks... every1 will have their own opinion

My brother is kind of in the same situation, and was a bit intimidated to show his girlfriend. In his case, I don't see anything wrong with it, and hopefully you don't in your situation as well. The good thing I see as far as my brothers relationship, is that he seems to tow the line much better than before. He needed that.

HECK NO YOU SHOULD NOT LET RACES DETERMINE THIS!! Who cares if hes mexican? that makes him unique!! if your family and friends or w/e have problems with taht then that is THEIR problem, not yours or his! just tell them what you think... should one guys skin color really make this much troble an heart break? I'll let you answer that one for yourself.

Um...no. I mean, people are racist, we kind of have to deal w/ that shet. My brother is white, his g/f is black, I haven't seen anyone complaining about it, but I'm sure they have. But I don't think it's a big deal and I don't think you should care what society thinks b/c a good portion of it is disrespectful.
