Step 1) Take a ruler or other measuring device for length.
Step 2) Align the string to the length of the ruler.
Step 3) Determine which "tick mark" the string ends up at.
Step 4) Look at the closest number you've covered and add the tickmarks to determine the fraction of an inch you have covered.
Step 5) FInally state the length of the string.

You must first be more precise in your definitions of the words, 'Long', 'Piece' and 'String'.
Does 'String' for example, refer to the 'string theory', string bean or string of pearls.
How do you give someone a 'piece' of your mind?
Do you ever 'long' for someone or something?
In accepting your question as perhaps you intended it to be read, then a 'piece' of string is whatever you decide it to be when taken from an infinite length of string.

String can be as long or short as you like. Cut it to the lengtlh you need. Try looking on the packet to see how long it is. The max length is proabaly like enough to cover the whole world. so 9999999 billion miles.
