Culture of samurai, what they were, what they did, what were they believed to be, their fading value in a quickly modernizing society. The suits the samurai wore and their importance to them.
All of these are facts you could expand on.
Their Traditions: the armor passed on to sons by fathers. They committed suicide rather than be defeated. Role of women.

The technology of the western world destroyed societies in other parts of the world. This can be shown through the collapse of the samurai/feudal system due to the introduction of firearms. Another is the role of women shown in the film in comparison the the men (women cooked/served, men fought), and the way samurais found glory in their battles. Also, the misconceptions towards the Japanese and how Tom Cruise's views towards them changed as he lived amongst them.
