Most definitely the western states (California, Oregon, Washington). They are notorious for the vast array of terrain. In every state there's the coast where the beaches are, then in different areas throughout there are rivers, forests, desert, valleys, mountains, etc. It's really a matter of what you prefer, though. In Oregon there are no sales taxes. Also on the West Coast... you still get all of that coast, but without the threat of any hurricanes.
I can tell you right now... don't ever live in Nebraska. It's the worst place to live in my opinion. I don't like a lot of the mid-west states mainly due to the lack of contrast in the terrain and the constant threat of tornadoes. I live in Illinois, though. I've been here for 3 months. In the first week a tornado touched down 1 mile away from my house and killed a guy while destroying a few buildings. Then just the other week there were multiple funnel clouds forming 3 miles away from my house.
Hawaii would be a great place to live as well. As long as you're not on the Big Island, there's not too much of a risk for a natural disaster. There may be the occasional Tsunami, but those don't happen too often and as long as you are far enough inland, you should be fine. The active volcanoes are both on the Big Island, so there's not really a huge volcano threat. It's also a nice tropical climate and the people are very nice and welcoming. It's full of great culture and excellent food. The cost of living is higher, but it's well worth it. I recommend the island of Oahu. It's home to a lot of Hawaii's most famous places. Including Honolulu, Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, and the North Shore which is notorious for it's great surf and nice houses. Depending on where you live on Oahu, you can usually find something affordable. It doesn't matter if you don't live right in the place you find best since you can usually find an affordable place within a 15 minute drive to somewhere that you would like to live if it weren't for the much more expensive homes.

Well i personally like the south, but the places i'm about to list are not places where i've lived before. I've just visited them and I think they're nice.
I like Charleston, SC because everything is so cute and quaint. Plus, they have great and interesting history (which i love), an aquarium, good shopping, and the beach! Thats so awesome.
I also love Savannah, GA for pretty much the same reasons that I like Charleston, except in my opinion Savannah is a little better just because of all the pretty tree lined streets.
I like Orlando, FL because of all the wonderful attractions you would never get bored and the weather is nice and warm and its just overall fantastic.
However, My favorite place is Arizona because they may not have "historic towns" or beaches but the land there is absolutely gorgeous. I got back from Phoenix about 2 weeks ago and my breath was taken away. lol. Very hot, which I like, beautiful landscape with cactuses and mountains and everything like that. Plus, I love the grand canyon.

As stated, each state has it's good and bad points. Much will depend on what a person is looking for.
Texas has no state income tax, offers a diverse culture, and has a fair cost of living.
Arkansas, Louisiana & Mississippi have a lower wage scale, but also offer a lower cost of living. They also offer all four seasons, but with the milder winter. If you like the slower pace life style, these can be good choices.
Ohio would be on the low end. Cost of living is high, winters are cold, and too many state laws... you can sell fireworks, but use them.

I live in the middle of NC. I can be in the mountains in 2.5 hours... or drive the other way to the beach and be there in 2.5 hours. Friendly people. Affordable homes. I lived in the DC metro area for nearly 10 years.. NC is so much better. :o) Plus, if you have kids there are tons of EXCELLENT colleges. And you arent in a tornado or earthquake prne area... just MILD hurricane leftovers.

I think one of the Western states,my personal favourites in no particular order are,California (North),Colorado,Washington,
Utah and Oregon. But to narrow it down to one state I will go for Washington because from there you have easy access to the others plus Canada.

Everyone is going to say whatever state they live in.
But coming from someone that has been to every state except for AK, and HI, I can tell you that there is no perfect state to live in. They all have their good and bad to them.

Very tough question!
If I win lotto and can do whatever I want, then....
Winter in Colorado or Utah (skiing, etc.)
Warm and not rainy season in Hawaii or Florida for water activities.
Just me....

Florida, (if hurracane stay away!!!) I think that this is the best place to live in the planet...

Texas. It has piny woods, deserts, hills, mountains, valleys, coastal beaches. You name we've got it. And we have the Mavs.
