Yesterday I seen that my memory was really low on my computer, and I tried to defrag the computer, but windows xp stated that in order to defrag I would have to make memory... I didnt have time to do that at the time, so I just shut the computer off. Now... when I turn on the computer it will do the scan disk and state no errors found, but when it should bring up windows... (the page with start button and everything) it just shuts the computer off and then it cuts back on. I have tried to start in safe mode, and it just gives a black screen with white file names or something.. and then shuts down after about a min or so... I dont know how to fix the problem, I dont know if it's from lack of memory, virus, or something wrong with the actual computer itself... anyone have an idea?

Turn on your computer, while it is no the initializing state hit F8. This will take you a selection menu. Select, Last Good Known, and hit enter it should recover the last working profile of your computer.
If it does not, then, basically, your installation is curropt. The only way out would be, starting the computer wth win XP cd. Boot it from CD, and then select Repair. Do not select the Manual.
This will repair the damages and most probably save the labor of reinstalling all of your programmes.
For Defrag you need to have at least 15% of the hard drive space. Without that, this kind of problems do happen.
Try to get rid of any unwanted software or files make room for computers operations.

When the Windows XP goes into "safe mode" you will get file names in white across the black screen. Be patient, if the program "hangs" that is a different story. What "safe mode" is actually is a version of Windows 98. If it doesn't go through all the drivers in a reasonable amount of time, you have a different problem. You will need your Windows XP installation disk to cure it. Start off like you were going to install Windows for the first time. You should see a blue screen with white text. It should ask you what do you want to do? Install, or use the recovery console? You will want to use the recovery console to "repair" Windows XP. So, type "r". The disk will either start to run files across the screen or will put you into a DOS screen. If it puts you in a DOS screen, type "chkdsk /p" there is a space before the /. And hit enter. Let this run, after check disk has run type in "exit" . Remove the Windows disk and boot normally. This should repair any corrupt files in the Windows O.S. without you losing any data or your programs. This only works with a Windows XP installation type disk, not with the computer manufacturer's recovery disk. That disk WILL erase everything on the hard drive and replace it with what was originally on your computer when you bought it.

It might be a virus, and if the computer keeps restarting and never coming on properly, try pressing F10 once you turn on the computer and re-install your whole hard drive (Full system recovery) because this sounds like it is an unfixable internal error.

you probably already had teh registry loaded in defrag, and corrupted it, when you boot up use the F8 key, and start with last good configuration, if that won't fix it, you will have to do a repair install of xp with the cd

Try to boot it off the CD. I sounds as if you may have a virus. If you can get it to boot, get thee to a virus scanning website like Trend Micro, Kaspersky, Symantec, Panda or McAfee.
Good luck.
