At the end of the day, that person has to find their inner resources/realization to get out of that state of mind.
P.S. I am not knocking people who do see a psychologist. Just wanted to get a perspective on the fact that a person must ultimately find the answers by him/herself.

the psychologist can show them how they are thinking wrong and help them find strategies to cope. this is called cognitive therapy and it helps the person to help himself and SEE HOW he may be causing much of his own problem with negative thinking or wrong thinking. He helps them to do what you say... find thier own inner resources to get out of that state of mind. it is hard when you are stuck in it. you need help.

Your question shows that you don't have any real understand of what a psychologist actually does.
We don't tell people the answers to their problems, we merely assist them in being able to find the solutions for themselves and these solutions are often different for different people.
Sometimes people feel very confused when they are depressed. Psychologists can really help people to clarify how they feel and to think about how they can help themselves.
It's like... It's like someone has a broken leg and a psychologist is a cast.
A cast doesn't itself fix the leg, it just puts the leg in a position so that the broken bone can knit back together so that the person can walk again.

I understand what you're saying. Depression can be because of something like getting fired from your job in which that can usually be cured without medication. However, when the depression comes from a chemical imbalance medication is usually required. However, after being on the medicine for awhile that person can find alterior resoultions for mentally beating the depression. Even though this is possible, many psychologists put their patients on psychoactive drugs to be in more productive state for therapy. Eventually for some mental illnesses...the doctor can wein the patient off of the drug.

Uhm-- clinical depression is often a nero-chemical dysfunction of the brain. It is extremely serious and very rarely just a matter of "pulling ones self up by the bootstraps"-- as opposed to cases of bouts of depression in normal people. I hope your question is a genuine misunderstanding and not an attempt to belittle this terrible burden of many people.
