bring up children in conversation. ask him what he thinks about having kids. then tell him.

Well...you best tell him as soon as possible.
Some things to consider:
1. do you plan to keep the baby?
2. do you expect him to provide support (financial, etc)?
3. how long have you two been a couple?

If you guys have been steady for a while, you should know by now how he'd react to news like this.
It sounds as if you two don't know each other very well since you're searching for answers here.

I don't know too many guys that want to be straddled with a kid when it wasn't in their life-plan.
And since you did not mention if he or you have a decent paying job or what your ages are, I can't really give you too much additional advice.

Anyway you slice it, you'd best decide what YOU want to do with baby (abort, adopt or keep).
Because right now, if you choose to adopt or keep, you best be seeing an OB/GYN doctor and getting the best care for the fetus - you are caring for TWO, not just you.

After you make that decision (and make it soon), talk to the boyfriend.
Someone clearly screwed up in the birth control department and it could get ugly if you two start a blame-game with each other.
Now, some state laws give the father certain rights.
He might want to keep the baby if you choose to abort or adopt.
But whatever his response is, keep it cool and do not get angry or upset.
The fetus responds to ALL your emotions.
