If you are loud in hope of others to recognize you, it's already pretense and you are not "being yourself." Well, being yourself has a really broad meaning. Suppose a person thinks it's fun to kill others and likes to be himself that way, do you think it's right?
For the same reason, you must be yourself without knowing clearly it's wrong when using your moral standards. My own definition of "being yourself" is to try to express your good sides and help others, not to unleash all your negative or evil personalities to the public.

Being yourself is being comfortable in your own skin. Never put on airs for anyone. Sure, there will be times when you don't feel like smiling, but you will do it anyways for the sake of your friends/family. Actually, I would consider that being yourself, because you're thinking of others. Just be comfortable with who you are, don't worry about people noticing you, I'm sure they will.

It could. I think the saying is mostly for those people that try really hard to be someone they are not. Then they are being fake. I don't think getting people to notice you means you you're not being yourself. I'll give you a slight example....
My friend i work with, she's a good kid. She has a boyfriend that is what I call a yuppie. I dress in big baggie skater/pink clothes and listen to Slipknot. Now she's just like me. But her boyfriend makes her dress in "nice" clothes. Jeans, collared shirts and so on. I remember me and her went out shopping, and she bought some pants just like mine. When she told her boyfriend about them, he said "whatever, just don't wear them around me" And she won't..
That to me is someone not being themselves. She'd really like to dress like me all the time, but her boyfriend won't allow it. So he's bascially making her be someone she is not.
Hope this helped :)

Doing things just so others will notice you can be being part of being yourself. Since everyone is different, we all have different ways of expressing ourselves and bringing attention to ourselves. You are exactly right--by being yourself, you can do whatever you want to do with your life, your personality, the way you dress, and everything about yourself. It's about being unique and being an individual person.
I agree!

Be yourself means exactly as it says. Don't act like other people or copy them so they think you like the same things. Just be yourself and if someone doesn't like you for who you are you do not need to change for them.

being yourself means doing things becasue u enjoy them and doing it for yourself, it means not doing things so ppl will notice u, that doesn't matter, be happy when ur happy and sad when ur sad, never change for someone or act a different way for someone

Being yourself means that what people think about you does not matter. You cease all approval seeking behavior and tend to ignore people who aren't specifically important to you.

One... if you are being yourself.... you shouldn't worry about others... to the point you are not hurting someone....
And if you like to be noticed.. what is the problem... you still are being yourself....
