The question is real. The original details are lyrics from a song that made me think of my disintegrating and increasingly distant extended family. I understand 'family' doesn't have to be blood. My family was disolving by the time I came along and so I never experienced what that is or how to carry it over to building a family out of friends.
I don't know if that makes sense....

Family is whatever you want it to be. My family includes my best friend, her mother, and her sisters. My husband refers to them as his in-laws, and my children think of them as aunts and another Grandmother. When people ask how we're related, we say by love not blood.

Many people say today that the family is a cultural structure. As society changes, so does the family. In Biblical times, the family was a patriarchal clan, a man with his wives and concubines, and their many children. Through most of history, the family changed to encompass a monogamous couple raising their children.
A new definition of family is emerging today, "a group of people held together by bonds of love and affection." This definition encompasses a variety of family forms, a man and a woman, married and unmarried, with or without children, gay and lesbian couples, singles, with and without children, and even larger groups of individuals in various communal living arrangements. What is important is not the actual family structure, but the quality of the relationships. Any attempt to create a hierarchy of family values is considered judgmental and insensitive to those in alternative families.

Family are the people that are there when nobody else would be there. They are the ones that you fight with, yet they keep coming back. They are the ones that call you at 2am crying, because they know you will answer. They are the ones that always defend you, no matter what it is or who it is from. Family are the people that you hold in your heart, even if you really dislike them at times.

Family...the ones who stick by you through thick and thin. They don't judge you and they help you no matter what. I have blood relatives, yet they are none of these things. They keep trying to cut me down and judge me for the right decisions I do for my son & I. True family loves very much in many ways.

Unfortunately blood doesn't necessarily mean family... It means blood relatives. But family is a group of people connected or bonded with love and concern for each other. That's been my experience.
