I don't think there is any "best set up" for aquarium plants. It depends on what you like and what kind of fish you have.

ive set up a 3 foot tank and filled with plants looks great i would only use sand easy to hide roots and bottom feeders love it make sure u have a new aqua glow bulb and some plant food too they will florish. ps if leaves die pull off from the roots they will regenerate and remember most plants you can cut down and plant what you cut off cause it grows roots too happy plantin!

put em inside the aquarium and don't plant them outside it. gets?

start with a good substrate, about 4-5 inches deep. Mix flourite, gravel, and sand.

next add enough light, 2-3 watts/gallon is ideal

add CO2 if you really want dramatic results.
