It's probably legal everywhere, I mean how can they prove your turtle is wild and not store bought? They don't brand them or anything. Why are you paranoid did you pull a "free willy?"

That is a tough question to answer- I have not seen any master compendium of state rules. To make it tougher, it might fall under several rules at once.

For example, in some places, all non-game animals are protected to some extent. Some places have lists of protected animals (box turtles are usually on such lists) that cannot be harrassed. Some states treat turtles, even boxies, as needing a fishing license for, while others just make rules about the pets you can or cannot have.

The rules might be city, county, state departments of wildlife, game and parks, interior, agriculture, etc.

As far as general box turtle info, try:

It would be easier if you tell me which state you're in and I can tell you the laws. There are different laws for different states and different species. There's 6 different species of common box turtles as well.

P.S. It is illegal in Alabama to keep any eastern or three-toed box turtle (Terrapene carolina spp.), whether is is WC (wild caught) or CB (captive bred). It doesn't matter the origin. Box turtle is a non-game species. I would suggest you contact a local reptile rescue of local state conservation authrity and explain your dilemma and ask them to take the turtle. I would not risk breaking the law.

Here is the law:
(2) It shall be unlawful to collect or offer for sale sell or trade for anything of value any box turtle (Terrapene Carolina), box turtle part or reproductive product except by permit as outlined in paragraph (1)

In most states it's illegal to catch any local species of reptile or any other animal for that matter.
