If you are driving, the easiest solution is to look at your speedometer, which shows miles and kilometres round the same dial. (Its just like converting between C or F on a dual thermometer.)

Otherwise....remember this sequence... 3, 5, 8.
(.A useful reminder is the simple sum... 3 + 5 = 8)

ok, so with these three numbers, ie 3,5,8, you can do most conversions, going higher to convert to kilometers, moving lower to convert to miles...

examples...
3 miles = 5 km. ( more in km, move up a number)
5 miles = 8 km ( more in km, move up a number)
5 km = 3 miles (fewer miles, move down a number)
8 km = 5 miles (fewer miles, move down a number)

got the idea? its all based on 3,5,8

Now try adding zeros, which just remain unchanged...

30 miles = 50 km (move up for km)
80 km = 50 miles (move down for miles)

and finally, for other numbers, first break it down into 3s, 5s, and 8s... convert... then add them up again.

9 miles = 3 + 3 + 3 miles = 5 + 5 + 5 km = 15km
10 miles = 5 miles + 5 miles = 8 km + 8 km = 16 km
200 km = 4 x 50 km = 4 x 30 miles = 120 miles

Its not perfect, only a rough guide, as shown here...

150 miles = 5 x 30 miles = 5 x 50km = 250 km
150 miles = 3 x 50 miles = 3 x 80km = 240 km

This is very easy if you know your multiplication tables LOL, but you are stuffed if you thought tables had no uses in life and didnt learn them!

RE:
how many miles is 5km?

Since 1 kilometer is approximately 0.62 miles, all you have to do is multiply 0.62 by 5 to get the approximate number. It is roughly equal to 3.1 miles.
