The AMA is simply a society of doctors. What your friend needs to check is if he is board certified for his specialty. Board certification means the doctor has completed post-residency training in his specialty and has passed rigorous examinations. For something as important as spinal surgery I would only see a Board Certified doctor.

Right--the AMA membership has no bearing whatsover on the doc's qualifications or abilities. First resource is the doc--ask about his/her success rate with the surgery you are having. This is a normal question. Ask his definition of "success" for the procedure. Then, get a second opinion from another doc about whether or not to go ahead with the surgery.
