BA- Batchelor of Arts - 3/4 year basic degree in a Humanities/Arts subject.

BA(Hons) - as above 'with honours' - a slightly higher standard, usually required to get into training for teaching, the law and so forth.

BSc & BSc (hons) as above but with science.

HND - Higher National Diploma (step below a degree)

MA, MSc, MPhil, MBA - Master of Arts, master of Science, master of Phil, Master of Business Admin. Basic postgrad degrees (taking 1-2 years above the base time)

...plus various doctorates from medical to philosophical, nursinf degrees, postgrad and undergrad teaching degrees ... the list is endless...

Most people start with a BA (Hons) or a BSc (Hons) as their first degree, then decide on whether the go on to a Masters or Doctorate research study later.
