Work is under way to convert the building into an indoor arena which will normally be used for pop concerts and other entertainment. Its capacity has been much debated in the media, ranging up to 20,000-26,000, but will most likely be similar to the MEN Arena in Manchester, Northern England, which is currently Europe's largest multipurpose arena. Speculation is that there will be a spectator capacity of 16,500, which is less than the 17,500 spectator capacity of the MEN Arena. It is thought that both The O2 and the MEN Arena will be heavily promoted as the UK's two main indoor venues for concerts.

The O2 will host the 2009 World Gymnastics Championships. At the 2012 Summer Olympic Games it will be used for artistic gymnastics and trampolining, for which it will have a spectator capacity of 16,500, and for basketball finals, for which it will have a capacity of 20,000. Earlier rounds of the basketball competition will take place at one of the arenas in the Olympic Park. A 6,000 seat temporary venue called the Greenwich Arena will be built near the Dome and will stage the badminton and rhythmic gymnastics events.

Last I checked the Millenium Dome is still there!

Timothy J. Leiweke, president and Chief Executive Officer of Anschutz Entertainment Group, said, "Today’s announcement (18 June 2004) reaffirms Anschutz Entertainment Group’s commitment to develop Europe’s finest entertainment and sports arena in London, the city we believe to be the world’s most important entertainment market. With our promise to create this world-class destination goes our pledge to join the bid to secure the 2012 Olympics for London. We look forward to starting on site."

Anschutz Entertainment Group is one of the leading entertainment and sports presenters in the world. The organisation owns or controls some of the world’s best and most famous arenas, venues and sports franchises in addition to divisions dedicated to the creation of live entertainment for all mediums.
