Largest mammal on land is the male African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) standing on average 3-3.7 m (9-12 ft) high at the shoulder and weighing 4-7 tonnes. The largest specimen ever recorded was shot in Mucusso, Angola, on November 7, 1974. Lying on its side, this elephant measured 4.16 m (13 ft 8 in) in a projected line from the highest point of the shoulder to the base of the forefoot, indicating a standing height of about 3.96 m (13 ft). Its weight was worked out to be 12.24 tonnes.

The largest living land mammal is indeed the African elephant, however the largest mammal ever to walk the land was a critter known as Indricotherium, an odd-toed ungulate sort of like a tall, skinny hornless rhinoceros that lived in India and Pakistan during the late Oligocene and early Miocene (between 30 and 10 million years ago).

Indricotherium was about 8 m (26 ft) at the shoulder, and probably weighed between 15 and 20 tonnes. Its skull alone was over 2 meters long. It probably fed on leaves high in the treetops, much like giraffes today (only more so).

Indricotherium is probably more commonly known by its juniour synonym Baluchitherium. Van Halen even recorded a song by this name.

Well, that's alive today, the elephant. But mammoths and mastadons, two ancestors of the elephant, were much bigger. However, they're extinct now.
