Dim Sum restaurants of Cantonese style find their origin in Guangzhou. They now represent the the most popular form of eating places in Hong Kong. They serve dim sum as well as other a la carte Chinese dishes such as fried rice, fried noodles, and BBQ during lunch and dinner times.
History: Modern-day dim sum restaurants have evolved from teahouses in the 18th and 19th centuries, that served only tea and dim sum, not meals. Dim sum restaurants appeared in early 20th century as they served the functions of both teahouses and restaurants. Traditional teahouses gradually disappeared and only a few still remain, like the Luk Yue Teahouse in Central, Hong Kong.
Dining in dim sum restaurants: Dim sum is no longer the attraction at modern-day Hong Kong dim sum restaurants, as they usually brand themselves as seafood restaurants. Some restaurants specialise in hotpot or BBQ and make those dishes their specialties.
Previously, dim sum was served only before lunch hours to tea drinkers. But now they are available during lunch hours, too. In mid-1990s, some Hong Kongers found interest in enjoying dim sum as mid-night snacks, so dim sum was also served after dinner hours in some restaurants.
During dinner hours, dim sum restaurants usually serve a la carte dishes. People host banquets for wedding, births, and other kinds of business and social gathering there. In recent years, dim sum restaurants face competition posed by hotels in banquet business as more people choose to host wedding banquets at hotels.
