BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY Donald J. Carty is chairman, president, and chief executive officer of AMR Corporation, the parent company of American Airlines, the second largest airlines in the United States. Prior to his career with American Airlines, Carty worked in several management positions for Celanese Canada, Air Canada, and the Canadian Pacific Railway. He also served in an executive capacity for American Airlines prior to 1985. In 1985 he left the company briefly to serve as president and CEO of CP Air of Canada. Carty returned to American Airlines in 1987 as a senior vice president of airline planning. He was promoted to vice president of finance and planning and served in that position from 1989 to 1995. In 1995 Carty was appointed president of AMR Airline Group and American Airlines. He was appointed chairman, president, and CEO of AMR Corporation in 1998.

Carty is active on several company boards including Dell Computer Corporation and Brinker International. He serves on the boards of the Canada-U.S. Foundation for Educational Exchange and the Family Gateway Advisory Board. He belongs to the Dallas Citizen's Council.

Carty graduated from the Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He is married and lives in Dallas, Texas.
