moscato d'asti is a sparkling white dessert wine, aromatic, sweet and fruity (you can smell in it pear, peach, sage...).
see if you can find something similar in the US - but I think that good wine stores should stock some moscato! here in italy it's not very expensive.
now I'm curious about the recipe... :-)

E' difficile sotstituire un prodotto italiano di così gran pregio con un surrogato magari da pochi dollari che trovi in supermercato.
Potresti provare con dello spumante (non troppo secco), ma che almeno quello sia italiano.
Scusa se ti rispondo in italiano... scusa eh?
Ma daltronde non è che anche tu abbia fatto uno sforzo enorme per venire a porre la domanda quì su answers Italia?!

It's very difficult to substitute it. I could only suggest you other wines hard to find there so, search for a "dessert wine". You'll be given a very sweet wine. Hope this helps...
