About Paradorn Srichaphan
The 24-year-old Srichaphan enjoyed his best career season in 2003 by becoming the first Asian to break into the Top 10 before finishing 11th in the ATP Champions Race. He began the year with a bang, winning the Tata Open without dropping a single set in the entire tournament. He followed this up with the International Series Long Island Crown for a second year in a row in August. He reached the finals in Indianapolis, USA, where he lost to Andy Roddick and had a good run at Wimbledon and the US Open, reaching the pre-quarters in both. He was the semi-finalist at the Miami TMS in Florida, losing to Carlos Moya, but nor before he had trounced the former World No.1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov along the way.
Srichaphan is quite a phenomenon. Consider this: at the beginning of 2002, he was ranked 120. He rose to 16 and was elected ATP's 2002 Most Improved Player of the Year. He then became the first Asian player to break into the world's top 10 earlier this year. The talented right-hander is a huge celebrity in his homeland and was named Thai of the year in 2002. Srichaphan seems to elevate his game during big occasions, having beaten some of the biggest names in world tennis in 2002 - Andre Agassi (USA) in straight sets at Wimbledon in the second round, former World No. 1 Marat Safin (RUS) in straight sets at Tashkent in the quarter-finals and former World No.1 Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) in straight sets at the Tokyo Outdoor Championships in the quarter-finals. He also proved during the year that he was indeed the Asian No.1 by winning the Asian Games gold medal in Busan, South Korea.

Personal
Began playing tennis at age six with his father, Chanachai, who quit his bank job to coach his son. He finished No. 10 in world junior rankings in 1996 and at the Southeast Asia Games in Brunei in 1999, came away as a triple gold medalist, winning singles, doubles and team categories. Considers ground strokes as strength and hard courts as favourite surface. Hobbies include car racing and watching Thai kickboxing. Believes in touching the ground where he plays for good luck and says, "I pick up the grass if I have time before the match. I put it in my pocket." Says red is his lucky color. In November 2002, became a cultural ambassador for his country and was issued a red diplomatic passport from Thai Prime Minister. Named "Thai of the Year," in 2002, ahead of several pop stars and politicians by a survey in his country...In the April 28, 2003 edition of Time Asia's magazine, earned a spot on cover and chosen as one of its 29 Asian heroes for 2003.
