"before"這字本身可以當介係詞和連接詞(另外亦可做副詞)，上面第１和３種情形就是當介詞時候的用法，因為介詞之後接受詞，受詞包括：名詞/代名詞/動名詞，第２種情形時，就是當連接詞的用法，之後就是接子句（主詞＋動詞）。
