AMBULATING WITH A WALKER
When ambulating with a walker, lifting of the patient’s body to decrease weight bearing is achieved by shoulder depression and elbow extension. The patient moves a walker by picking it up, moving it astride length forward, and placing it on the floor. Walkers should be lifted and set down so that all four legs clear or contact the floor simultaneously.
Some patients will ’’rock’’ the walker, lifting and setting down two legs and rocking onto the other two legs. Pocking the walker reduces the base of support and stability a walker provides when used properly. Rocking the walker should be discouraged.
The patient’s leading lower extremity should not be placed beyond the crossbar. Doing so prevents appropriate weight shifting over this lower extremity. When stepping beyond the crossbar occurs, the base of support and stability provided by a walker are compromised.
