不生產凝集酵素的金黃色葡萄球菌以往都被視為不具致病性，直到多重抗藥性的菌種出現，並且被證實為具致病性的感染源。以巴西而言，80%分離出來的菌株具有扼煞西林(oxacillin)抗藥性，有鑑於此，臨床與實驗標準局(Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute)將紙錠擴散法予以標準化，以預測金黃色葡萄球菌的抗藥性。
