例如: the rich and the poor 後面應該接單數還是複數動詞?

讓我們以實例來證明﹕
將“the water and the oil”整句當關鍵字(前後要加雙引號 " )放到google上做英文網頁搜尋﹐可找到上千個以“the water and the oil”為主詞的例子﹐此處僅舉數例如下﹕
1........so that the water and the oil flow into the well. ...
(......以便水與油流入井中......)
2.....both the water and the oil like to stick to....
(.....水與油兩者都喜歡黏附在......)
3 Basically, the water and the oil make up the lens.......
(基本上﹐水與油組成透鏡....)
4 the water and the oil have densities which differ only very slightly.

(水與油均有其密度但僅有些微差異...........)

以上接在“水與油”後面的動詞﹕flow﹑like﹑make﹑have及are都是複數的。

像The rich(富人)﹑the poor(窮人) 本身就是複數﹐屬於集合名詞性質與主題無關﹐因此不在討論之列。

更正﹐像The rich(富人們)﹑the poor(窮人們) 本身就是複數﹐屬於集合名詞性質﹐單單一個The rich或the poor就必須用複數動詞﹐何況是“The rich and the poor”。

因為是兩種不同性質的東西
除非把兩者合為一個話題來講, 那麼就用單數
