(1) imagine + N/V-ing
(2) imagine + 受詞 + V-ing
(3) imagine + (that 引導名詞子句) + S + V
I can't imagine (that) the trees (主詞) are being felled (動詞,且是以現在進行式的被動語氣寫的).
I can't imagine the trees (受詞) being felled (分詞做受詞補語用).

如果照你的原句 “I can't imagine the trees are being felled.”,除同一句中出現雙述詞動詞外,尚出現不是加V-ing的問題,所以根本不能這樣寫.但若寫成 “I can't imagine the trees being felled.”, 則 imagine 後的動詞變為被動V-ing仍不是你所希望的寫法,對不?

I can't imagine the trees falling down (to the ground).

It should be

I can't imagine the trees being felled.
I can't imagine the trees are being felled.
