關於捷運車廂內的一句英文

Question

不知道大家有沒有發現捷運車廂內的一句英文 ，在車門的上方

"The light indicates the side which the door will open."

請問這句英文有問題嗎？是不是要改成

"The light indicates the side in which the door will open."

"The light indicates the side where the door will open."

比較好，不然會造成語意不清？的受詞

就原來的句子而言，which 是代替前面的先行詞side，而作是open的受詞，變成open the side，是否有點奇怪？還是本來就可以這麼說？謝謝大家的回答！

關於Kevin所提到的將which看成是疑問詞而非關係代名詞，而將於原

句改成"The light indicates on which side the door will open."，其中"on

which side the door will open"被視為是「名詞子句」，不過我翻了一

些文法書，對於「名詞子句」的介紹好像沒有「以『介系詞 ＋ 疑問

詞』引導的名詞子句」的用法耶，還是真的有這種用法呢？謝謝

版主的問題可以這樣來看:

原來的敘述句要怎麼寫(假設是左邊)?
The door on the left side will open.

改為疑問句呢?
On which side will the door open?

把這個疑問句改為名詞子句:
The light indicates on which side the door will open.

所以癥結在於:
本句似乎不容易以which當關係代名詞來寫, 而必須把它當疑問形容詞, 引導一個名詞子句, 來作為動詞indicate的受詞. 如此就不至於有版主原來的疑慮了.

[open the side]的確是有點奇怪. ^_^

您的疑問不無道理, 其中的原因來自動詞與所搭配的介系詞之間的連接強度(親和力)的不同.
I am looking for a fountain pen.
改為疑問句, 通常是:
Which kind of pen are you looking for?
而不會是(雖然也可以):
For which kind of pen are you looking?
因為[to look for]這樣的組合具有很強的親和力.

但是:
The door on the left side will open.
[on]與[the left side]的親和力強過與[open]的親和力.
即使改為:
The door will open on the left side.
也應該這樣配置:
The door will open [on the left side].
而不會是:
The door will [open on] the left side.

改為疑問句, 通常是:
Which man do they depend on?
而不會是(雖然也可以):
On which man do they depen?

所以才會有:
On which side will the door open?

字典裡收錄的idioms(慣用語)通常是很強的.
所以您可以查得到:
[to look for], [to depend on],
但是通常是查不到[to open on]的.
