They are made of microbes chosen for their ability to produce chemicals which will attack other microbes and destroy the germ causing illness. When the scientist make these same chemicals in the laboratory, antibiotics are created. The most famous of this group is penicillin, which was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928 when one of his petri dishes containing germs developed a green mold. Rather than discard it as useless, he watched it for a few days and noticed taht the mold was killing the germs in the dish. As the mold grew, more germs died. He finally extracted the liquid from the mold and so discovered penicillin.
