塗鴉在英語中是以複數 Graffiti 表示。其單數詞為 graffito。兩字均由義大利文借用得來,並且都是起源於希臘文graphein,意指「書寫」或是小孩子無意識的塗鴉行為。塗鴉最早是由Romans開始,在他們的社會,抗議的宣洩詞語或聲明經常被塗寫在公共場所或街道牆壁.
