Thermoplastic is a plastic which can be softened (or melted) when the plastic is heated. A much higher temperature is needed to burn or decompose a piece of thermoplastic than to soften it.
The temperature of boiling water is 100oC. At this temperature, nylon is softened, but will not burn or decompose.
