In Brazil, negro and mulatto, fall into the same category.

No much difference, even in the South, where racism is still very alive, but quite quiet.

Nao ha muita diferenca, ate mesmo no Sul, onde o racismo
ainda esta bem vivinho, e bem quieto.

From Rio to North, there has always been a great tolerance in the black race.

Brazil is blessed with this great African lineage, with its gorgeous blend of black and white, to create the mulato.

Our great blacks and mulatos:
In sports: Look at Pele: At just 17, he was the best player in Sweden, giving Brazil its 1st Soccer World Cup (1958).

Nossos ilustres negros e mulatos:

Our great writer Machado de Assis: was a mulatto.

...and so, Elza Soares and Angela Maria were some of our greatest singers.

In the arts: One of our greatest culptors of all times, Aleijadinho and painter Lito Cavalcante..

Comparing the Black history between Brazil and US::
We Brazilians had the racial integration, immediately when slavery was abolished, by Princess Isabel, in 1888, while in America, racial integration was signed by President Johnson, in 1964 (76 after Brazil).

As a matter of fact, this might explain, the reason why American blacks have a very heavy accent (except those college educated) while Brazilian blacks and mulattos, have no black accent.

In Brazil we have a very special admiration for the black-black and for the mulatto girls, for their color, well cared body and mischiveous and passionate smile.!

In Brazil, the very black and the mulattos, presently, face no differences in social encounters, career achievement or in any other field of life...

To be quite honest to you, it's still a blur in our minds, because for a lot of people it's still not comfortable to say that someone is black, or African-Brazilian. Mind you, there are some real black guys who are referred to as "dark"... But, in general, mulatos are a little tan, have nippy hair, African-like features, but are not really black.

The difference between Black and Mulatto is the mixture of races. Mulatto is the mixture between a White and a Dark Skinned person. Here in Brasil a Mulatto can consider himself even white, because the concept here of Black or white is related with the color of skin. Many Brazilians that have Africans ascendents are considered white here.

its my understanding that the favelas are filled with the darker Brazilians. I dont know if that means that there is racism in Brazil, but it sure has racism's footprint.

Now everybody wants to be black, no matter if the skin colour is light brown; if your grandfather's grandfather's grandfather's mother was black, then you are black, cos that way you can get easily into university and if someone does anything that you dislike you just say the person is racist and that is a horrible crime. Now tell me who's got pure white blood on planet earth?
