These symbols are known as state symbols (but not nouns).

State symbols can be used to show the physical states of pure substances.
(s) - solid state, e.g. I2(s) means iodine solid.
(l) - liquid state, e.g. Hg(l) means mercury liquid.
(g) - gaseous state, e.g. H2(g) means hydrogen gas.

State symbols can also be used to show the solvent of a solution.
(aq) - aqueous solution (water is used as solvent), e.g. I2(aq).
(CH3CH2OH) - ethanol is used as solvent, e.g. I2(CH3CH2OH).
(CCl4) - tetrachloromethane is used as solvent, e.g. I2(CCl4).
………… etc.
