KMnO4 solution is usually acidified with dilute sulphuric acid (H2SO4) solution.

Dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) should not be used. This is because HCl is a weak reducing agent, which may be oxidized by KMnO4 to give chlorine gas.

Dilute nitric acid (HNO3) should not be used. This is because dilute HNO3 is an oxidizing agent. This makes the system complicated which contains two oxidizing agents, KMnO4 and HNO3.
