When calcium reacts with sulphuric acid, calcium sulphate and hydrogen is formed.
Ca(s) + H2SO4(s) → CaSO4(s) + H2(s)
The insoluble CaSO4 coats on the surface of the calcium granules. This will reduce the surface area of calcium and thus will lower the reaction rate.
