小弟覺得此句是沒錯的

had為主要動詞,這邊是用(過去簡單式)

hope為名詞,非動詞,當(Hope)做''願望,想要達成的事時"
是可數的

我想你有問題的是''that"後面所接的此一句子
其實此句是''hope''的同位語,代表的就是其內容

The prisoner had hopes that he might be set free.
(hopes=he might be set free)

此類句型十分常見,如:
He heard the news that his team had won.
(the news=his team had won)

故小弟認為此句是正確的

其實我也有想過Hope單複數的問題,不過我有看過不少複數的用法
所以小弟猜想這邊的Hopes不是代表''幾個hopes''
應就是單純指"想要達成的事'',如:
But they have hopes that Mr. Ford can begin to turn the tide.

我覺得有些不對,hope可以是名詞或動詞,

如果是動詞,應該是,
The prisoner had hoped that he might be set free.

如果是名詞,我會改為,
The prisoner had hopes and one of them is that he might be set free.

怎麼看都不對,請參考

hopes是複數(幾個hopes)that he might be set free只是一個hope所以我改為 The prisoner had hopes and one of them is that he might be set free.
