"OpinionWhat a beautiful little object ! It belongs in the collection at the MOMA. It feels like a hybrid between an iPod and a series III Leica. Very nice tactile experience.

It has numerous features (will read txt files, play MP3 and video files, as well as record sound) which are of little interest to me at this time.

But this is a camera, first and foremost, and in this respect it is unfortunately less than stellar: file compression is excessive (even at the finest setting) and noise (visible at 1:1 starting at ISO 200) leaves something to be desired, though, admittedly, at full-screen on a computer, the pictures look fine. In a 4x6" print image quality is perfectly fine.

I find the menus far less convenient than, say, Casio's , but I am able to quickly access the most important setting for me, which is +/- exposure compensation.

Focusing is good, macro superior, flash quite satisfactory for such a small camera, just 18mm thick.

I wish that the NV3 came with a cradle (the plug-in cable being a less convenient substitute), and it really should be packed with a small carry case/pouch to protect the large screen while it is being carried in a pocket or bag.

I got the NV3 for some $220 through Amazon, which makes it a very good value despite its shortcomings.


ProblemsNo problems. But shortcomings such as I see them are listed below:

1) Excessive file compression, resulting in loss of picture detail, as seen easily at 1:1

2) Noise starts to appear at 200 ISO

3) Should come with a USB/power cradle (optional, at extra cost, and unavailable as yet...)

4) Should come with at least a cloth carry pouch

5) Battery life could be better

6) LCD view has a strange yellowish tint which is not present, fortunately, in the recorded image file.

7) the manual is stunningly unclear and printed microscopically"
