Can a laptop really replace a desktop?

I have always loved the idea of having a very portable pc for gaming at friends or at lans. I have done numerous builds with cases for lans. I've built a machine in the Antec Lanboy, Antec Aria, Biostar Ideq, and half a dozen other cases. But none of them had the ease of portability that a laptop has. There were always extras to carry around. A monitor, keyboard, mouse, powerbrick, and speakers really adds to the amount of hardware to carry. I've had laptops for years but never had one that was good for gaming. I always spent money getting a good desktop and a cheap laptop. Until recently that is.

For the last year, I've had a laptop as the only computer on my desk. In fact, our household has two laptops. One is a Dell 9300 and the other is a Dell 700M. The only desktop we have is a file server machine that sits on my beer fridge in the laundryroom. It's an Athlon XP 1700 with integrated graphics and a 200gb hard drive. It won't run Quake 4, FEAR, or Call of Duty 2. It doesn't even have a keyboard or mouse connected to it (I use Windows Remote Desktop for connecting). We use it for file storage and backup duties. My wife requested a small laptop for her. I didn't want to lose a lot of power without a desktop and the 9300 fit the bill. There are some compromises I've had to make but I'm happy to do so for the mobility of a laptop. It runs any game out right now and runs them all well. So, what do you need to enjoy gaming on a laptop?
