Hi John , be welcome to Brazil =) Rio is a wonderful city , there are many funny things to do and beautiful things to see ; many nice beaches , Copa Cabana , Ipanema , Barra da Tijuca ; the Jardim Botânico , a big park with a beautiful area of Atlantic Forest ; you have to visit the Christ and the Sugar Loaf , they are wonderful and you can see all city from there , everybody who visits Rio have to know them ; the city is big , very cool, day and night , and the people is beautiful , sweet and funny! I hope you have an excellent trip .

Welcome to Rio de Janeiro...Well, the first thing, I am carioca(I was born in Rio), but my husband is british citizen and all times that he went to Rio de Janeiro, we take care because the town is beautiful, but is dangerous as well, as people already told you, avoid went ot the beach with jewel(necklace, wristwatch, bracelets) and camcorders, cameras, socks, tennis shoes, try to be similar as possible to the town people, avoid the urban buses, be very carefull at the night, avoid empty places, don't show money and open wallet at the streets, don't go out with much money and credit and debit cards, passport and be very carefull with the children at the streets...I reckon, the best think to do, it's avoid to be alone, but, be carefull with the women as well... The people is kind, generous, majority of times want to help...All times that my husband went to Brazil, we always made touristic strolls, normal by car, and always with too much carefull, and thanks God, nothing never happen to us... Try to get a car and go to traditional Pao de Acucar(Sugar Loaf), Corcovado(Christ _The Redeemer), Grumari beach, Recreio dos Bandeirantes(Biological Reservation)beach, go to Churrascarias(Barbecue Restaurants_it's wonderful!!!!), museums like Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil at the downtown, drink too much coconut water at the beach(Oh!!Homesickness...)...
The Rio de Janeiro is beautiful, dangerous as well, but if we take the basics care, we avoid bad situations...

Enjoy your trip to BR! Rio de Janeiro is beautiful! "Be attentive to people" around you as "Bush" and Homeland security put it. Common sense anywhere you go. Even the US is not safe; though some people dream so. A person I know in the US just had his house broken into. As you see no place is safe/secure as some people think. I have relatives in Rio but again for safety reasons, I don't know you either. If you stay at a hotel you will have info how/where/when to get around Rio and visit nice places. on the web there are plenty of sites with all kinds of ideas for trips anywhere in the world. There is a way for everything nowdays. Yes, I am BR and proud of.

Stay in a nice hotel around Copacabana beach. Go to all the tourist sites with a tour from your hotel. Make sure you know the address and tel number of your embassy and also register there. Just remember, there are no check points in Brazil, the police has no right to stop you and ask for Id without any reason, unfortunately that happened to friends of mine , tall black man, the police stopped them and asked for id, since they left it at their hotel, the police told them they had to pay a fine, and they had to give the police 400 us dollars, so be careful, of course my friends later complained to the police, they said they were investigating and found the policeman that stole their money, but , they were never given the money back. Rio is beautiful, I hope you have a good time, just be always with someone.

Fique hospedado em Copacabana, va a praia logo voce tera companhia, ou a noite sente num bar na praia de Copacabana.
Nunca leve todo seu dinheiro com voce, deixe no cofre do hotel, não demonstre que tem muito dinheiro, nem a sua situação financeiras nos EEUU, é melhor inventar que ganhou a viajem de premio, e voce estuda nos EEUU, não tem salario.
