一位交情不錯的老美朋友，他的父親往生了， 我是想寄email給他，但是，不知道怎麼措辭...，中文裡面有很多慣用語像是節哀順便，我第一次遇到老外朋友有家人往生，還真不知道怎麼說...Help!

信的前段你當然可以寫說:
I am very sorry to hear that your father....
I feel very sorry to hear the shocking news about your father...
就依照你跟他的熟悉程度寫點慰問的話
I hope tha you can get over it soon.
但最後一定要加上這句
My condolence (=節哀順變)
Please send my condolence to your families.

-my sympathies on the passing/death of your father
