Based on Arrhenius theory of acids and bases, all acid-base reactions occur in aqueous solutions or some reactants in aqueous phase.
Based on Bronsted-Lowry theory of acids and bases, many proton-transfer reactions occur in aquoeus solutions, and many occur in non-aqueous. The commonest reaction is the reaction between ammonia and hydrogen chloride, and this reaction may occur in gaseous phase or solution of methylbenzene (or other organic solvent). The reaction for the gas phase reaction is :
NH3(g) + HCl(g) → NH4Cl(s)
