Jokes are as old as the spoken word. In every country in the world and in every age of history, people have told fanny stories to make one another laugh. During the Middle Ages in Europe, the court jesters amused the king and his court with jokes and tricks. They wore special costumes of many colors, decorated with balls, and hats with donkey's ears.

During the later Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the jokes told by jesters began to appear in collections. One of the bast-knowen English joke books was Tarlton's Jests, which appeared about 1611. Richard Tariton was veryfamus because he was the favorite jester of Queen Eluzabath I. While she was queen, jesters were at the height of popularity. After she died, official court jesters disappeared, but joke- telling and joke books continued.

While we no longer have court jesters, we still have people whose job is to make us laugh ─ the clown un the circus, comedian on stage, the host or hostess of the variety show. We still laugh at jokes that have a surprise endung, tall tales, and stories of people who simply never seem able to do anything right. Smart or stupid answers aiso amuse us. Here are some smple jokes.
