Why nitrogen can be use to keep thing well?

to keep things well, oxygen can be removed. this can prevent the things to be oxidized by oxygen. for example, old newspaper goes yellow under the attack of oxygen for long time.
also, books are easily attacked by insects and bugs. replacing oxygen with nitrogen can make the bugs suffocate (and die), so that the object is protected.
