在化學上，matter 和 substance 都譯作物質，但用法不同。
Matter 泛指『所有物質』和『物質這類東西』。例如：Matter is made up of particles.
Substance 指『某一特定物質』。例如：Water is a substance.
All substances 亦泛指『所有物質』，例如：All substances are made up of particles.
