When your car is being collided by another car from behind, your car is subject to a sudden forward acceleration. The driver and passesngers inside the car are therefore accelerated with the car. If no headrests are present, the heads of passengers, because of inertia, tends to move behind their bodies. This will result in injury or broken of neck bones. Hence, a headrest will help the driver's body and his head to move forward at the same time when under impact from behind.
